Typhoon Wendy Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Wendy (196306) at 1963年7月10日在Northwest Pacific洋面 formed, 初始Position位 at 14.3°N, 146.9°E.
The key turning point occurred around July 16. As it moved north of 22°N, the system began turning significantly toward the north, with an increasing eastward component. From 20:00 on July 16 to 14:00 on July 17, the typhoon center passed near the seas east of Taiwan, from 120.4°E to 119.1°E, before moving northward offshore along southeastern China. Between 02:00 and 08:00 on July 19, it completed its final turn from north to north-northeast near 28.5°N, eventually reaching the high-latitude sea near 38.7°N on July 20. It made no landfall throughout its lifetime and remained at sea.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Wendy's intensity evolved through three stages: rapid intensification, a prolonged peak, and gradual weakening. It developed from a tropical depression with winds of 15 m/s at 02:00 on July 10 into a super typhoon with winds of 55 m/s by 14:00 on July 11, taking only about 36 hours and demonstrating its explosive intensification. Wendy reached its lifetime peak at 20:00 on July 13, when its central pressure fell to 924 hPa and maximum winds reached 70 m/s. It remained at super typhoon intensity, with winds above 65 m/s, until 08:00 on July 15, maintaining its peak for an extended period.
Beginning on July 16, environmental factors caused the storm to weaken significantly, dropping rapidly from a severe typhoon to a severe tropical storm and then weakening into a tropical depression on July 17. Notably, in the late stages of its life at 14:00 on July 20, the system briefly re-intensified into a tropical storm with winds of 20 m/s near the high-latitude region of 38.7°N, an unusual occurrence during its transition to a temperate system.
Compared with other storms of the same name, Wendy in 1963 was exceptionally intense. Its peak pressure of 924 hPa was far lower than those of Wendy in 1999 at 990 hPa, 1978 at 961 hPa, and 1974 at 984 hPa. It was only slightly weaker than Wendy in 1971, which had a central pressure of 915 hPa. Both were exceptionally rare super typhoons, indicating that the name Wendy in certain years tends to be associated with high-intensity tropical cyclones.

FAQ
Wendy was the 1963 Typhoon.
Wendy's 196306 identifier is a historical number continued by the CMA, meaning the 6th typhoon of 1963. Its international name was WENDY. International cyclone numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, agencies used their own numbering systems. The numbers assigned by JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the USA, and China's meteorological authorities may differ for the same typhoon and therefore cannot be directly compared.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Wendy come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Wendy?
Typhoon Wendy peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 70m/s, minimum central pressure 924 hPa.
