Typhoon Wendy Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Typhoon Wendy underwent an extremely rapid intensification. Starting as a tropical depression on August 27 with winds of 15 m/s and a central pressure of 1004 hPa, it became a super typhoon just three days later on August 30, with winds of 65 m/s and a central pressure of 926 hPa. It peaked on August 31, when its minimum central pressure fell to 918 hPa and maximum winds reached 70 m/s. Although it remained a super typhoon for several days, through September 4, its pressure rose slightly and its wind speed fluctuated. After entering the South China Sea, its intensity began to decrease in stages due to environmental factors. It weakened to typhoon strength on September 5 and finally diminished to a tropical depression on September 9.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 1968 Wendy was significantly more intense. Its peak central pressure of 918 hPa was far lower than those of Wendy in 1999 (990 hPa), 1974 (984 hPa), and 1978 (961 hPa). Only Wendy in 1971 (197121), with a peak intensity of 915 hPa, was comparable and slightly stronger than the 1968 typhoon. This indicates that both Wendy in 1968 and Wendy in 1971 were super typhoons with highly destructive potential, while other storms of the same name were relatively weaker, generally maintaining typhoon or tropical storm intensity.
