Analysis of Typhoon Bess
Track and Turning Characteristics
8月2日系统位 at 140.1°E, 随后逐渐 toward lng 度减小受阻并转为N上. 8月3日至8月5日, Typhoon 在137°E附近完成转 toward , 路径由NW转为正N, 进而转 toward NE. 8月9日后, 随着纬度突破30°N, 系统Go to W风带控制区, Moving速度加快且 direction稳定指 toward NE. 最终, 该系统穿越Japan以E海域, 深入高纬度地区, at 8月16日在54.6°N, 179.3°E附近消散, 全程未Landfall任何land, 属 at 典型的远洋typhoon track.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Bess’s intensity followed a complete formed–intensification–peak–weakening cycle. It began as a tropical depression, with pressure above 1000hPa. After strengthening into a tropical storm on July 31, its intensity rose rapidly. It developed into a severe typhoon on August 3, with pressure falling to 961hPa. Just two days later, on August 5, it reached peak intensity as a super typhoon, recording a minimum central pressure of 930hPa and maximum winds of 65m/s. Peak intensity lasted until around August 7, after which it began to weaken as it moved north and encountered colder sea temperatures. It weakened to a severe typhoon on August 9 and then to a severe tropical storm on August 10, ultimately becoming a low-pressure extratropical cyclone over the cold waters of the high latitudes.
Compared with previous typhoons bearing the same name, Bess in 1963 was significantly stronger than Bess in 1996, 1979, and 1978, which had minimum central pressures of 975hPa, 955hPa, and 983hPa, respectively, based on Bess’s 930hPa peak intensity. However, it was weaker than Bess in 1982, which reached 901hPa. This shows that typhoon intensity varies considerably under the name Bess, but the 1963 storm remained among the sequence of highly destructive severe typhoons. Its exceptionally long lifespan and deep low-pressure structure were rare in historical data from the same period.

FAQ
Typhoon Bess is the 1963 Typhoon.
The number 196308 associated with Typhoon Bess is the historical identifier retained by the CMA, meaning the eighth numbered typhoon of 1963. Its international name is BESS. International standardized numbering in the northwestern Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies maintained separate numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological agencies for the same typhoon could differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Bess come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Bess?
Typhoon Bess peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 930 hPa.
The Typhoon BessLandfall.
