Typhoon Wendy Route Analysis
Path and Moving Characteristics
Typhoon Wendy (197121) at 1971年9月4日在Northwest Pacific远洋海域 formed, 初始Position位 at 19.5°N, 167.1°E.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Wendy underwent an exceptionally rapid and explosive intensification. Starting as a Tropical Depression on September 4 (10m/s, 1004hPa), it reached its peak in less than three days, attaining Super Typhoon status by 20:00 on September 7, with a minimum central pressure of 915hPa and maximum wind speeds of 70m/s. Notably, it showed signs of secondary intensification on September 10 while moving north, with pressure falling again to 922hPa and wind speed recovering to 60m/s, indicating strong resilience. It then weakened gradually under the influence of the high-latitude environment, eventually declining to Severe Tropical Storm intensity before dissipating on September 14.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Wendy's intensity in 1971 was notably higher than in other years. The peak intensities of the same-named typhoons in 1999, 1974, and 1978 were Tropical Storm, Severe Tropical Storm, and Typhoon, respectively, with minimum pressures all at or above 961hPa. Only Wendy in 1968 (196811) was comparable in intensity, also reaching Super Typhoon status. However, Wendy's minimum pressure in 1971 was slightly lower at 915hPa than its 1968 value of 918hPa, and its maximum wind speed was higher, making it one of the highly destructive remote-ocean Severe Typhoons on record.

FAQ
Wendy was the 1971 Typhoon.
The designation 197121 used for Typhoon Wendy is a historical CMA number, meaning the 21st typhoon of 1971; its international name was WENDY. The international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, each agency maintained its own numbering, so the numbers assigned by JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (USA), and China's meteorological authorities could differ for the same typhoon and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Wendy come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Wendy?
Typhoon Wendy peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 70m/s, minimum central pressure 915 hPa.
Typhoon Wendy Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Wendy is not in our coastal Landfall.
