Typhoon Betty Route Analysis
Path and Moving Characteristics
The key turning point occurred from August 15 to 16. As the system moved north to around 21.5°N, its direction gradually shifted from northwest to due north, then turned northeast toward the East China Sea on August 17. Notably, despite its extremely high peak intensity, the Typhoon made no landfall and eventually weakened and dissipated inland near Jiangxi on August 20. Its long track extended from development into a Tropical Depression to its Super Typhoon phase, followed by rapid decay at high latitudes, demonstrating the significant steering effect of the mid-latitude westerlies on its later track.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Betty underwent three stages of intensity evolution: rapid intensification, peak maintenance, and abrupt weakening. From August 8 to 12, pressure plummeted from 1006hPa to 960hPa while wind speed surged from 15m/s to 40m/s, indicating excellent thermal support over the warm ocean. Betty reached its peak on August 15, with a minimum pressure of 910hPa and maximum winds of 60m/s. The sampled minimum pressure was 916hPa, but the peak description confirms Super Typhoon status. Thereafter, as the system moved northward and was affected by possible vertical wind shear, intensity began to decline. By 20:00 on August 17, it had weakened into a Typhoon, with winds of 35m/s and pressure of 972hPa, and rapidly degraded to a Tropical Depression after moving inland.
Compared with previous storms bearing the same name, Betty in 1972 reached a relatively high intensity. Its peak pressure of 910hPa was lower than that of Betty in 1980 (925hPa) and Betty in 1975 (948hPa), but slightly higher than the record minimum of Betty in 1987 (891hPa), and much stronger than Betty in 1984 (980hPa). This makes the 1972 storm a typical high-intensity case in the sequence of storms named Betty, with the destructive potential of a Super Typhoon. Although it made no landfall, its extensive and long-lasting wind field posed a sustained threat to maritime shipping.

FAQ
Typhoon Betty is the 1972 Typhoon.
The identifier 197209 used for Typhoon Betty is the historical number retained by the CMA, corresponding to No. 9 of 1972, while its international name was BETTY. International numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies assigned their own numbers, so the numbers used by JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities for the same Typhoon could differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Betty come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Betty?
Typhoon Betty peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 60m/s, minimum central pressure 910 hPa.
The Typhoon BettyLandfall.
