Typhoon Phyllis trajectory
Track and Movement Characteristics
The system then turned northeast and accelerated. From July 12, the typhoon rapidly moved away from its origin, with its longitude shifting eastward from 153.5°E to 137.3°E and its latitude continuing northward to 38.8°N. This large-scale turn generally indicated that the system had escaped the subtropical high and entered the region ahead of a westerly-wind trough. Throughout its entire lifecycle, the typhoon did not make landfall and remained over the ocean, eventually becoming a extratropical cyclone or dissipating over the eastern seas of Japan.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Phyllis exhibited explosive intensification and remarkable persistence. It began as a tropical depression on July 6 (15m/s, 1004hPa) and became a super typhoon in just about four days. From 14:00 on July 10 to 08:00 on July 11, its pressure plunged below 944hPa (the data showed 948hPa, with a peak of 944hPa), while its maximum wind reached 65m/s, making it a super typhoon. Notably, it remained near peak intensity for an extended period and maintained severe typhoon intensity even after beginning to weaken on July 12. As it moved northward into cooler waters, the system gradually weakened and had become a tropical depression by the end of July 16.
In comparison with other typhoons of the same name, the 1972 Typhoon Phyllis was especially intense. Its minimum central pressure of 944hPa was far lower than that of Phyllis in 1987 (955hPa), 1981 (975hPa), and 1966 (996hPa). Although the 1960 Typhoon Phyllis also reached super typhoon intensity, its minimum pressure was 965hPa, weaker than the 1972 storm. The data show that the 1972 Typhoon Phyllis was the strongest and had the lowest pressure among the listed same-named typhoons, reflecting the highly favorable typhoon-development environment in the Northwest Pacific that year.

FAQ
Typhoon Phyllis was the 1972 Typhoon.
The designation 197205 for Typhoon Phyllis is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the fifth typhoon of 1972, while its international name is PHYLLIS. International numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, different agencies used their own numbering systems. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon, so these numbers cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Phyllis come from?
Path. Data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speed refers to 2-min sustained wind speed. Track points at intermediate times are encrypted based on original operational positioning data, while wind speed and pressure are interpolated using best-track anchor points.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Phyllis?
Typhoon Phyllis peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 944 hPa.
