Analysis of Typhoon Tess
Track and Movement Characteristics
7月20日后, 系统Go to 中高纬度区域, 加速 toward NE, 最终 at 7月25日在40.7°N, 131.3°E附近减弱消散. 全程无Landfall记录, 主要活动范围集中在开阔洋面, 从W.Pac平洋深处延伸至Japan以E海域及更远的高纬度地区.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Tess completed a full lifecycle with notable intensity evolution. It began as a tropical depression and rapidly intensified, developing from a 15 m/s tropical depression into a super typhoon in just four days, from July 10 to 14. It reached peak intensity on July 15–16, when the minimum central pressure fell to 940 hPa and maximum winds reached 70 m/s. It maintained super typhoon status for approximately 48 hours. From July 18, as it moved northward and environmental conditions changed, its intensity steadily declined, weakening from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon and then a typhoon. By July 23, ahead of its transition into a temperate cyclone, it had weakened to a severe tropical storm. It eventually weakened into a tropical depression and dissipated over the high-latitude seas north of 40°N.
Compared with previous typhoons bearing the same name, Tess in 1972 had a decisively stronger intensity. Its peak pressure of 940 hPa was far lower than the 975 hPa recorded in 1988, 965 hPa in 1985, 968 hPa in 1978, and 988 hPa in 1982. Tess in 1982 reached only tropical storm strength, whereas Tess in 1972 not only met super typhoon criteria but also maintained high intensity for a long period, making it the strongest storm among the Tess typhoons listed.

FAQ
Typhoon Tess is the 1972 Typhoon.
Tess's number 197206 is a historical identifier retained by the CMA, meaning the sixth typhoon of 1972. Its international name was TESS. The unified international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, each agency used its own numbering, so the JMA, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and China's meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon. These numbers cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Tess's track data come from?
Path. Data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speed refers to 2-min sustained wind speed. Track points at intermediate times are encrypted based on original operational positioning data, while wind speed and pressure are interpolated using best-track anchor points.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Tess?
Typhoon Tess peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 70m/s, minimum central pressure 940 hPa.
Is there a typhoon TessLandfall?
According to records, Typhoon Tess is not in our coastal landfall.
