Typhoon Betty Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Betty (198021) at 1980年10月28日08:00在Northwest Pacific低纬度海域 formed, 初始Position为6°N, 154°E.
At around 20:00 on November 4, Typhoon Betty reached its westernmost position at 15.8°N, 122.8°E, before making a clear turn. From November 5 onward, the system moved toward the northeast, with latitude rising rapidly and longitude gradually shifting east. By the time it dissipated at 20:00 on November 8, its center was at 29°N, 144°E. Throughout its lifetime, Betty never made landfall, remained over the sea, and eventually weakened into a tropical depression in the mid- to high-latitude ocean before dissipating.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Betty的Intensity演变经历了典型的“快速增强-巅峰维持-迅速减弱”过程. 从10月28日的Tropical Depression (10m/s, 1004hPa) 起步, 系统在 toward WMoving过程中急剧加强. 仅用约5天Time, at 11月4日02:00达到peak intensity, 此时中心最低气压降至925hPa, max wind 达60m/s, 评定为Super Typhoon. 值得注意的是, 在11月4日02:00至20:00期间, 其Intensity维持在巅峰状态 (60m/s, 925hPa) .
However, after turning toward the northeast, Betty's intensity rapidly declined as the surrounding environment changed. At 14:00 on November 5, its wind speed dropped abruptly to 35m/s and its central pressure rose to 980hPa, downgrading it from a super typhoon to a typhoon within a single day. It continued weakening afterward until dissipating.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Betty's peak intensity in 1980, at 925hPa, fell between the 1972 typhoon at 910hPa and the 1987 typhoon at 891hPa, and was stronger than the 1975 typhoon at 948hPa and the 1984 typhoon at 980hPa. Although its minimum central pressure was not the strongest on record, its maximum winds of 60m/s indicated extremely high destructive potential, making it one of the stronger typhoons named Betty in history.

FAQ
Typhoon Betty was the 1980s Typhoon.
Betty's number 198021 is a historical sequence number retained by the CMA, meaning the 21st typhoon of 1980. Its international name was BETTY. International numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China's meteorological authorities may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Betty come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
