Analysis of Typhoon Lee
Track Movement and Recurvature Characteristics
Typhoon Lee (198124) formed at Northwest Pacific低纬度海域, 初始Position位 at 10°N, 140°E附近.
After December 25, as the system moved deeper into the eastern South China Sea, its heading gained a slight northward component, though the main body continued advancing westward. Until it dissipated on December 29, its center reached 19.6°N, 113.9°E, with no recorded landfall along the way. This long, relatively straight westward track indicates that during its active phase it was mainly steered by the stable easterly flow on the southern side of the subtropical high, in a relatively simple and stable environmental field.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
The intensity evolution of Lee followed a typical rapid intensification, peak maintenance and gradual weakening pattern. At 02:00 on December 23 the system was only a tropical depression (9 m/s, 1008 hPa), but it strengthened quickly over the following 48 hours. Especially between 02:00 on December 24 and 14:00 on December 25, the pressure plummeted from 992 hPa to 948 hPa and maximum winds surged from 20 m/s to 45 m/s, successfully developing into a severe typhoon. This rapid intensification was closely linked to favorable sea surface temperature conditions and vertical wind shear during its westward movement.
The peak stage was short-lived. After reaching its minimum pressure of 948 hPa at 14:00 on December 25, the system began to weaken. After entering the western South China Sea, terrain friction and the intrusion of dry air caused its intensity to continue dropping, and by December 27 it had been downgraded to a severe tropical storm, finally dissipating as a tropical depression on December 29.
Compared with typhoons of the same name in other years, the intensity of Lee in 1981 was markedly higher than that of later storms sharing the name. Both Lee in 1985 (198508) and Lee in 1988 (198818) peaked only at severe tropical storm strength, with a minimum pressure of 980 hPa. By contrast, Lee in 1981 not only reached severe typhoon status but also had a minimum pressure 32 hPa lower and maximum winds more than 15 m/s higher, showing that late-season typhoons of that year had greater explosive potential under certain environmental conditions.
