The key turning point occurred between October 20 and 21. After reaching peak intensity at 21.3°N, 128.9°E, the system changed direction significantly. At 02:00 on October 21, it was located at 23.5°N, 128.5°E, and by 20:00 it had moved to 26.4°N, 130.4°E. Its longitude then began turning eastward as it entered the region ahead of a westerly-wind trough and accelerated northeastward under the pull of the westerly jet. The track subsequently became more curved, sweeping rapidly across the seas east of Japan before weakening into a tropical depression at 42°N, 154°E on October 23 and ending observations. It made no landfall and was a typical remote-ocean recurving typhoon.

Although different storms sharing the name Gay have exhibited widely varying intensities, the 1981 event displayed the thermal and dynamic characteristics typical of a severe typhoon and completed its full life cycle over the open ocean.
