Typhoon Viola trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Viola underwent three stages of intensity change: rapid intensification, a brief peak, and gradual weakening. It began as a tropical depression, intensified into a severe tropical storm on the evening of November 18, and became a typhoon on November 20. The most dramatic development was its explosive intensification from November 21 into the evening of that day. In less than one day, its central pressure dropped from 935hPa to 910hPa and its maximum wind speed surged to 60m/s, reaching super typhoon intensity. After briefly maintaining its peak, its intensity began fluctuating downward from November 22. Its pressure rose to 925hPa, followed by continued weakening. It was downgraded to a tropical storm on the evening of November 24 and eventually reverted to a tropical depression before dissipating.
Compared with earlier typhoons of the same name, the 1978 Viola ranked between the 1969 storm, which reached 896hPa as a super typhoon, and the 1964 storm, which had a central pressure of 980hPa as a typhoon. Although its minimum central pressure was higher than that of the 1969 storm, it was far more intense than the 1964 storm. This indicates that the climate background in certain years can support intense typhoons within this naming sequence. Overall, the 1978 Viola was a typical severe open-ocean typhoon with a long lifetime, high peak intensity, and no direct landfall impacts.

FAQ
Typhoon Viola was the 1978 Typhoon.
The number 197825 for Typhoon Viola is the historical identifier used by the CMA, corresponding to the 25th numbered typhoon of 1978, with the international name VIOLA. The international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies assigned numbers independently, so the numbers used by the JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and China’s meteorological authorities for the same typhoon may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Viola’s track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Viola?
Typhoon Viola peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 60m/s, minimum central pressure 910 hPa.
The Typhoon Viola Landfall.
According to records, Typhoon Viola is not in our coastal landfall.
