Typhoon Ora trajectory analysis
Track and Turning Characteristics
Typhoon Ora (197821) at 1978年10月10日02时在Northwest Pacific洋面 formed, 初始Position为16.8°N, 134.6°E.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
In terms of intensity, Ora rapidly intensified to its peak and then weakened quickly. Starting as a tropical depression on October 10 with winds of 15m/s and a central pressure of 1000hPa, the system intensified into a severe tropical storm within 48h and became a typhoon at 14:00 on October 12. At 14:00 on October 13, it reached peak intensity, with a minimum central pressure of 943hPa and maximum winds of 45m/s, qualifying it as a severe typhoon. However, it maintained peak intensity for a very short time. Just 12h later, at 02:00 on October 14, its central pressure had risen to 970hPa and its wind speed had dropped sharply to 35m/s, indicating rapid weakening caused by the changing environmental field. The system continued to decay afterward, moving into the mid- to high-latitude seas as a tropical storm.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 1978 Ora was significantly stronger than its counterparts in 1975, 1972, and 1966, with peak central pressures of 970hPa, 981hPa, and 970hPa, respectively. It was slightly weaker than the 1968 super typhoon Ora, which had a central pressure of 932hPa. Although the 1978 Ora did not set the historical record for the strongest storm with this name, it was among the more intense storms of the past decade, and its rapid intensification was noteworthy.

FAQ
Typhoon Ora is the 1978 Typhoon.
The identifier 197821 for Typhoon Ora is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the 21st typhoon of 1978. Its international name was ORA. The internationally standardized numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies assigned their own numbers, so the identifiers used by the JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (USA), and China’s meteorological authorities for the same typhoon may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Ora's track data come from?
Path. Data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speed refers to 2-min sustained wind speed. Track points at intermediate times are encrypted based on original operational positioning data, while wind speed and pressure are interpolated using best-track anchor points.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Ora?
Typhoon Ora peak intensity is Severe Typhoon, max wind 45m/s, minimum central pressure 943 hPa.
Is the Typhoon OraLandfall?
According to records, Typhoon Ora is not in our coastal landfall.
