Typhoon Viola trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Go to 7月23日后, 随着纬度N抬至10°N以上, 路径逐渐 toward NW direction调整.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Viola’s intensity evolution was characterized by explosive intensification and rapid weakening. From a tropical storm with winds of 20 m/s on July 21 to a super typhoon with winds of 75 m/s on July 26, it took only about five days. Central pressure plunged from 1004 hPa to 896 hPa, while maximum winds increased by 55 m/s, demonstrating exceptionally high development efficiency. Its peak intensity was brief, maintaining winds of 75 m/s and an extremely low central pressure near 900 hPa from July 26 to 27. However, after 20:00 on July 27, its intensity began to decline sharply. Within 48 hours, wind speed fell from 70 m/s to 12 m/s and pressure rose to 983 hPa, indicating rapid structural collapse in a high-latitude or unfavorable environment.
Compared with other typhoons sharing the same name, the 1969 Viola was far more intense. The 1978 Viola (197825) also reached super typhoon status, but its minimum central pressure was 910 hPa, weaker than this year’s 896 hPa. The 1964 Viola (196402) reached only typhoon status, with a minimum pressure of 980 hPa, making the difference even more pronounced. The data show that the 1969 Viola was one of the most intense and had the lowest central pressure among same-named typhoons from that period.

FAQ
Typhoon Viola is the 1969 Typhoon.
196903 is the historical number used by the CMA for Typhoon Viola, meaning the third typhoon of 1969. Its international name was VIOLA. The international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, different agencies maintained separate numbering systems. The Japan Meteorological Agency, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon, so these numbers cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Viola’s track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Viola?
Typhoon Viola peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 75m/s, minimum central pressure 896 hPa.
