Typhoon Pamela trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
The typhoon completed a full lifecycle of formation, rapid intensification, peak-intensity maintenance, and rapid weakening. Starting as a tropical depression on May 14 with winds of 10 m/s, it intensified into a typhoon in just four days and rapidly became a severe typhoon on May 19. From May 20 to May 23, it maintained super typhoon intensity, reaching maximum winds of 65 m/s at 08:00 on May 23, while minimum central pressure fell to 921 hPa. The pressure table lists 936 hPa at that time, but the peak-intensity column identifies 921 hPa as the minimum; this analysis therefore uses the peak value, or notes that pressure fluctuated between 921 and 936 hPa. This indicated an extremely powerful convective core. After May 24, the typhoon weakened rapidly as it moved northward into cooler waters, with wind speed dropping from 45 to 35 m/s within 48 hours. After transitioning into the mid-latitudes, it quickly acquired the characteristics of an extratropical cyclone.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Pamela in 1976 was exceptionally intense. Its peak intensity as a super typhoon, with a central pressure of 921 hPa, was significantly greater than that of the storms of the same name in 1982 at 940 hPa, 1972 at 940 hPa, and 1979 at 995 hPa. Only Pamela in 1961, with a pressure of 909 hPa, had a lower central pressure. This made the 1976 storm the second-strongest typhoon to bear the name Pamela in recorded history and showed the deep-convective structure typical of a severe typhoon.

FAQ
Pamela was the 1976 Typhoon.
Pamela's number 197606 is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the 6th typhoon of 1976, while its international name was PAMELA. The internationally unified numbering system for the Northwest Pacific was not introduced until 1981. Before then, agencies used their own numbering systems. The numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the USA, and China's meteorological authorities to the same typhoon may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where did the track data for Typhoon Pamela come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the strongest typhoon Pamela?
Typhoon Pamela peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 921 hPa.
