Typhoon PamelaCharacteristics of path分析
Characteristics of path
Pamela formed at 8.5°N, 177.9°E on November 23 and initially moved generally northwest. From November 24 to 26, its center latitude increased from 7.0°N to 8.9°N while its longitude moved continuously westward from 175.0°E to 166.6°E. It reached 11.7°N, 160.8°E on November 28 and intensified significantly during this period. Its track began turning on the 29th, shifting from northwestward to westward, with its latitude briefly rising to 13.7°N before falling back to 12.0°N on the 30th. It then continued moving westward, with longitude decreasing from 154.9°E to 135.6°E. From December 3 to 4, it moved slightly northward, with latitude increasing from 12.9°N to 15.5°N. After the 4th, its track turned southwestward, reaching 16.3°N, 129.4°E on the 5th before moving south to 10.1°N, 116.5°E on December 8. No landfall was recorded.
Evolution of intensity
The system began as a tropical depression on November 23 with maximum winds of 9 m/s and a central pressure of 1006 hPa. It strengthened into a severe tropical storm on the 25th and reached typhoon strength on the 26th, peaking as a severe typhoon on the 28th with maximum winds of 50 m/s and a minimum pressure of 940 hPa. Its intensity then declined, weakening into a typhoon on the 29th and a severe tropical storm on the 30th, while remaining a tropical storm from December 1 to 3. It briefly strengthened to a severe tropical storm on the 4th and reached typhoon strength again on the 5th, with maximum winds of 40 m/s and a minimum pressure of 978 hPa. It weakened again thereafter and ultimately fell to tropical depression intensity on the 8th. Overall, it followed a fluctuating path of rapid intensification, marked weakening, brief renewed intensification, and continued weakening.
Historical Comparison
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Pamela in 1982 peaked at the same severe typhoon intensity as Pamela in 1972, with a minimum pressure of 940 hPa in both cases. However, it was notably weaker than the super typhoons in 1976 and 1961, which had minimum pressures of 921 hPa and 909 hPa, respectively. Its peak intensity also exceeded that of Pamela in 1979, which reached only tropical storm intensity with a minimum pressure of 995 hPa.
