Typhoon Sally Route Analysis
Track and Turning Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Typhoon Sally underwent three stages: rapid intensification, a period of peak intensity, and gradual weakening. Starting as a tropical depression, Sally strengthened rapidly over about four days, with central pressure dropping sharply from 1005 hPa to 923 hPa and maximum winds increasing to 45 m/s, reaching severe typhoon status. It attained peak intensity at 14:00 on June 28. Although central pressure then rose slightly to 940–950 hPa from June 29 to 30, maximum winds remained at 45 m/s, indicating a strong and stable structure. In early July, as the typhoon moved toward higher latitudes, environmental factors caused it to weaken gradually, eventually dissipating before becoming an extratropical cyclone.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Sally in 1976 was significantly stronger than Sally in 1972 (984 hPa) and 1961 (980 hPa), based on its peak intensity of 923 hPa and 45 m/s. It was slightly weaker than Sally in 1996 (935 hPa; the comparison here is based on central pressure, for which the lower value of 923 hPa in 1976 indicates theoretically stronger or comparable intensity) and Super Typhoon Sally in 1964 (897 hPa). The data show that the 1976 Sally was one of the most intense storms named Sally in the historical record, with a minimum central pressure surpassed only by the 1964 version.

FAQ
Typhoon Sally was the 1976 Typhoon.
The identifier 197608 for Typhoon Sally is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the eighth typhoon of 1976, while its international name was SALLY. International numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may differ for the same storm and cannot be compared directly.
Where did Typhoon Sally’s track data come from?
Path. Data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speed refers to 2-min sustained wind speed. Track points at intermediate times are encrypted based on original operational positioning data, while wind speed and pressure are interpolated using best-track anchor points.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Sally?
Typhoon Sally peak intensity is Severe Typhoon, max wind 45m/s, minimum central pressure 923 hPa.
Typhoon SallyLandfall?
According to records, Typhoon Sally is not in our coastal landfall.
