Typhoon Della Trail Characteristics
Track and Movement Characteristics
The decisive turning point occurred from September 22 to 23. When the center reached approximately 22.1°N, 125.9°E, it attained one of the northernmost latitudes of its lifetime before gradually turning from northwest to north and then toward the northeast. This turning coincided with a rapid increase in latitude, moving from 25.7°N on September 23 to 30.3°N on September 24. It ultimately entered the high-latitude seas south of Japan and gradually weakened and dissipated. Throughout its lifetime, it made no landfall and remained over open waters.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Della’s intensity evolution featured a long buildup followed by a rapid burst. From September 12 to 17, the system remained a tropical depression for an extended period, with pressure gradually falling to 1000hPa. Starting September 18, its intensity surged, strengthening from a severe tropical storm (25m/s) to a severe typhoon (50m/s) in less than 48h. On September 22, the system peaked near 22.1°N, recording a minimum central pressure of 930hPa and maximum winds of 60m/s, making it a super typhoon. It then weakened steadily as it moved northward and the environment changed, degenerating into a tropical depression by September 25.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Della’s intensity in 1968 was notably stronger. Its peak pressure of 930hPa was far lower than in 1978 (985hPa), 1971 (970hPa), and 1963 (971hPa). Even compared with the second-strongest Della in 1974 (958hPa), the 1968 storm had a central pressure 28hPa lower and maximum winds 10m/s higher, demonstrating its exceptional destructive potential and energy among typhoons with the same name.
