Characteristics of Typhoon Freda
Track and Movement Characteristics
Go to S海后, 系统维持NW路径穿越巴士海峡W侧海域, 最终 at 7月16日在VietnamE部coastal 附近减弱消散. 全生命周期内, 该Typhoon 未Landfall任何land, 始终在海上活动, track pointstotal 计41个, 显示出较长的海上存续Time与较为流畅的Moving轨迹.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Freda’s intensity evolved through three stages: rapid intensification, a period of peak intensity, and rapid weakening. Initially, the pressure fell from 1006 hPa to 997 hPa and the wind speed increased to 15 m/s. After becoming a typhoon on July 9, its intensity increased explosively, with the pressure plunging to 923 hPa and maximum winds reaching 75 m/s in less than three days, making it a super typhoon. The peak phase lasted about 24 hours, from July 12 to July 13, during which the minimum pressure was in the 924–925 hPa range. From July 14, as the system moved north toward the mainland, its intensity declined sharply, the pressure rose above 956 hPa, and the wind speed was halved.
In historical comparisons among typhoons with the same name, Freda in 1965 had a notably outstanding intensity. Earlier storms of the same name in 1984, 1977, and 1971 reached only severe tropical storm or typhoon intensity, making the 1965 storm significantly stronger. Even compared with the 1987 typhoon Freda, which also reached super typhoon intensity with a minimum pressure of 915 hPa, the two storms were comparable in peak intensity. However, Freda in 1965 established its status as a typical severe typhoon of that summer through its exceptionally low pressure of 923 hPa and extreme wind speed of 75 m/s, demonstrating a highly intense release of energy.

FAQ
Typhoon Freda was the 1965 Typhoon.
The designation 196508 for Typhoon Freda is the historical identifier used by the CMA, meaning No. 8 of 1965, while its international name was FREDA. International storm numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies maintained separate numbering systems, so the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon. These identifiers cannot be compared directly.
Where did the track data for Typhoon Freda come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Freda?
Typhoon Freda peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 75m/s, minimum central pressure 923 hPa.
The Typhoon FredaLandfall.
According to records, Typhoon Freda is not in our coastal landfall.
