Typhoon Dinah Route Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The key turning point occurred between June 17 and June 18. The Typhoon reached a latitude of 17.8°N near 123.5° and then made a marked turn, shifting from a NW movement to N before rapidly turning toward NE. After June 19, it accelerated toward NE, rising from 27.6°N to above 36°N within a short time before entering the mid-latitude westerlies. It eventually dissipated near 166°E on June 24. Throughout its lifetime, the Typhoon made no landfall and remained over the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Dinah underwent explosive intensification followed by rapid weakening. After becoming a Tropical Storm on June 12, it continued to deepen while moving northwest and strengthened from a Tropical Storm (20m/s) to a Super Typhoon in just 5 days. It peaked on June 17, with a minimum central pressure of 934hPa and max wind speeds of 80m/s, indicating tremendous accumulated energy. However, after turning northward on June 18, its intensity declined sharply due to changes in the environmental field and possible vertical wind shear. Within 24h, max wind speeds fell from 80m/s to 45m/s, while pressure rose to 975hPa. As it moved to higher latitudes, it further weakened into an extratropical cyclone.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Dinah (1965) peaked slightly below Dinah (1987), which reached 920hPa, but was significantly stronger than Dinah (1980) at 941hPa, Dinah (1977) at 963hPa, and Dinah (1974) at 974hPa. Dinah (1965) therefore belonged to the higher-intensity tier of storms sharing this name. Its extreme wind speed of 80m/s was also rare in the historical records of its time, reflecting the intense nature of Northwest Pacific typhoon activity that year.

FAQ
Typhoon Dinah is the 1965 Typhoon.
Typhoon Dinah’s 196506 is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the sixth typhoon of 1965. Its international name was DINAH. International numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (USA), and China’s meteorological agencies may differ for the same typhoon and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Dinah come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Dinah?
Typhoon Dinah peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 80m/s, minimum central pressure 934 hPa.
Typhoon DinahLandfall?
