Typhoon Jean Trail Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The critical turning point occurred around August 5. At 14:00 on August 5, the typhoon was located at 29.6°N, 128.5°E. Its track then turned significantly and began accelerating toward the northeast. By 08:00 on August 7, its center had reached 42.6°N, 134.5°E. Its latitude increased by nearly 13 degrees in just two days, indicating strong steering by the westerlies and marking its transition from a tropical system to a temperate system. The system eventually dissipated over the high-latitude seas north of 52°N. It made no landfall and remained mainly over open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Jean's intensity underwent a long period of strengthening followed by rapid decay. It began as a tropical depression, with central pressure maintained between 1002-1007hPa. From July 31, wind speed increased to 30m/s and the system upgraded to severe tropical storm. After August 2, its intensity grew explosively: it reached typhoon status with winds of 40m/s on August 2, intensified into a severe typhoon with winds of 50m/s on August 3, and peaked at 14:00 on August 5. At that time, its minimum central pressure fell to 940hPa and maximum wind speed reached 65m/s, confirming super typhoon status.
After peaking, the system rapidly weakened as its latitude increased. Wind speed fell to 35m/s on August 7, and it further weakened to a tropical depression on August 9. Compared with other typhoons of the same name, Jean in 1965 was significantly more intense than in other years. Jean in 1974 reached only severe tropical storm status with a central pressure of 991hPa, while Jean in 1962 reached typhoon status with a central pressure of 976hPa. Even Super Typhoon Jean in 1971 had a minimum central pressure of 968hPa, far higher than the extreme 940hPa recorded by Jean in 1965. This makes Typhoon No. 12 of 1965 the most intense storm among all recorded cyclones with this name, featuring the lowest central pressure and an exceptionally powerful release of energy.

FAQ
Typhoon Jean is the 1965 Typhoon.
The identifier 196512 for Typhoon Jean is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the 12th typhoon of 1965, while its international name was JEAN. International numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies maintained their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China's meteorological agencies may differ and cannot be directly compared.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Jean come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Jean?
