Characteristics of Typhoon Haikui
Track Movement and Recurvature Characteristics
The life cycle of Typhoon Haikui (202311) began over the northwest Pacific Ocean. Its overall track followed a typical W-shaped pattern, but it slowed significantly and adjusted its course as it approached land. From its formation on August 28 at 18.4°N, 142.9°E to September 2, the system maintained a stable west-northwestward track, with its latitude rising gradually from 18.4°N to 22.2°N while its longitude shifted substantially westward. Notably, between September 2 and 3, the typhoon center’s latitude changed very little, from 22.2°N to 22.8°N, while it continued moving westward, indicating a brief quasi-stationary or slow-moving phase over the waters east of Taiwan. This created favorable conditions for a rapid increase in intensity.
After the landfall, the route occurred a noticeable turning point. September 3, 15:30 at the Taiwan E Citycoastal Landfall, the system crossed the Taiwan Island Go to Taiwan Strait, then at September 5, 05:20 at the Guangdong Pine County Coastal Second Landfall. Go to the inland and near sea, its Moving speed significantly slowed, during September 5 to 6, the latitude essentiallyined near 23.5°N, near the right W toward, until weakened into Tropical Depression.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Intensity evolution of “Haikui” experienced rapidly increased to the peak after rapidly weakening the whole process. The initial phase is Tropical Storm, then steadily strengthened. especially during the 2nd of September to the 3rd of September noon, Pressure dropped sharply from 960hPa to the lowest 935hPa, max wind jumped to 52m/s, to the Super Typhoon level. However, due to the friction and environmental factors, its intensity dropped after the September 3rd Landfall Taiwan, short 9h wind speed from 52m/s to 35m/s, the air pressure rose back to 970hPa.
Compared with the historical typhoon, Haikui's intensity in 2023 is significantly higher at recent similar systems. 2017 'Haikui' peak only for Severe Tropical Storm (minimum atmospheric pressure 985hPa), 2012 'Haikui' although reaches Severe Typhoon level (minimum atmospheric pressure 945hPa), but in 2023 the system's minimum atmospheric pressure is lower, wind speed is greater, and reaches the Super Typhoon standard.
