Characteristics of Typhoon Chebi
Track and Movement Characteristics
Notably, as this typhoon crossed the Philippines and moved into the eastern sea, its track made a slight southward kink before heading west again. From 11:00 to 23:00 on November 10, its latitude edged up from 16.15°N to 16.2°N, then gradually moved south to 15.1°N from November 11 to 12, showing clear guidance by easterly flow on the southern side of the subtropical high. After entering the South China Sea on November 13, the track turned northwest, with latitude rising from 15.1°N to 17.2°N, before dissipating near 110.4°E on November 15. It made no landfall throughout its lifetime and remained at sea.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Chebi underwent a typical process of rapid intensification, peak maintenance, and gradual weakening. It initially formed as a tropical depression with a pressure of 1002 hPa. During the daytime of November 10, the system rapidly strengthened while moving west, rising from typhoon intensity of 36 m/s and 968 hPa to super typhoon intensity of 52 m/s and 938 hPa in about 12 hours. It reached its peak at 23:00 on November 10, when the minimum central pressure fell to 935 hPa and maximum wind speed reached 55 m/s.
After its peak, the typhoon’s intensity fluctuated and declined. By noon on November 11, it had weakened to a severe typhoon with winds of 42 m/s, and it weakened further to typhoon intensity that evening. After entering the South China Sea, its structure became increasingly disorganized due to environmental factors. It weakened to a severe tropical storm on November 12, became a tropical storm on the 13th, and finally weakened to a tropical depression on the morning of the 14th, remaining at that intensity until dissipating.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 2006 Chebi had a relatively high intensity. Its peak pressure of 935 hPa was much lower than the 980 hPa recorded in 2001, the 985 hPa recorded in 2013, and the 960 hPa recorded in 2004, indicating a tighter core structure. Although slightly weaker than the 2018 Chebi, which reached 905 hPa, Chebi was a super typhoon, and its maximum wind speed of 55 m/s reflected extremely destructive potential, making it one of the strongest Chebi typhoons on record.
