Characteristics of Typhoon Xangsane
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Xangsane (200616) began its lifecycle at 08:00 on September 25, 2006 and ended at 20:00 on October 2, without making landfall. Spatially, the typhoon maintained a stable west-northwestward track. It initially developed over waters east of the Philippines (129.1°E), then moved northwest toward and through waters near the Philippine archipelago. After entering the South China Sea, its track gradually shifted almost due west.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
During its peak-intensity phase (from 02:00 on September 30 to 04:00 on October 1), Xangsane’s central pressure remained steadily within the 950–957hPa range, with winds of 43–45m/s, demonstrating an exceptionally stable core. However, from 09:00 on October 1, as the system moved westward toward the coast, its intensity began to decline sharply. Within a single day, it weakened from typhoon strength to a tropical depression (10m/s, 1002hPa).
Compared with the typhoon of the same name, the 2000 Xangsane (200020) peaked only at typhoon strength, with a minimum central pressure of 965hPa. By contrast, the 2006 Xangsane had a central pressure 20hPa lower and stronger maximum winds. Its overall intensity was significantly greater than that of the 2000 typhoon, making it a more destructive severe typhoon system.
