Typhoon Ioke Route Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The critical turning point occurred from late August to early September. After reaching peak intensity on August 30 at 17.1°N, 170.6°E, the typhoon’s track began shifting significantly eastward. From September 1 to 2, its central latitude jumped northward from 20.2°N to 23.6°N while its longitude moved from 165.4°E to 157.7°E, marking its formal transition into the westerlies. The typhoon subsequently accelerated toward the northeast and finally weakened and dissipated over the high-latitude waters near 51.9°N on September 7. It made no landfall and spent most of its life over the open ocean.
Intensity Evolution and Peak Status
Ioke’s intensity evolution went through three stages: rapid intensification, prolonged maintenance, and gradual weakening. Beginning as a tropical depression on August 20 with winds of 13m/s and a central pressure of 1010hPa, the system rapidly intensified into a severe typhoon within four days. On August 26, its central pressure fell to 950hPa and its wind speed reached 55m/s, making it a super typhoon. It then maintained exceptionally high intensity for a full week, with its central pressure ranging from 920hPa to 935hPa. At its peak on August 30, its minimum central pressure was 920hPa and its maximum wind speed was 60m/s.
This phenomenon of maintaining super typhoon intensity for so long is relatively rare in the Northwest Pacific. Even after it began turning northward on September 1, its intensity declined slowly, remaining a severe typhoon at 45m/s through September 4. Once its latitude rose above 35.7°N, cold sea waters and upper-level wind shear caused the system to weaken rapidly into an extratropical low-pressure system. Compared with other historical typhoons of the same or similar designation, Ioke’s exceptionally low central pressure of 920hPa and maximum wind speed of 60m/s demonstrated tremendous energy reserves and structural stability, making it a notable long-lived severe typhoon of the 2006 Pacific hurricane season.
