Typhoon Judy Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
The turning point was located approximately between 26° and 27°N. Starting at 08:00 on July 26, the system’s center coordinates changed rapidly from 26°N, 137.6°E to 27.7°N, 136.3°E, marking the shift in movement from NW to NE. It then accelerated toward the NE, crossing the eastern waters of the East China Sea, before moving into the high-latitude region and weakening on July 29. No landfall was recorded during its life cycle, and it remained mainly over open waters.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Judy’s intensity followed a complete strengthening–peak–weakening cycle. It began as a tropical depression, with pressure around 1004hPa. After becoming a tropical storm on the evening of July 23, its intensity rose rapidly, developing from a severe tropical storm into a severe typhoon in about 36h. At 08:00 on July 26, it reached its peak intensity, with a minimum central pressure of 945hPa and maximum winds of 50m/s, making it a severe typhoon. The peak phase was brief. Influenced by the high-latitude environment, its pressure rose and wind speed decreased. It weakened to a severe tropical storm on the evening of July 28 and was finally monitored as a tropical depression on the 29th.
Compared with historical typhoons of the same name, Judy’s intensity in 1989 was at a moderately high level. Its peak pressure of 945hPa was higher than that of Judy in 1979 (908hPa, super typhoon) and Judy in 1982 (956hPa, severe typhoon), but significantly lower than that of Judy in 1986 (970hPa, typhoon) and Judy in 1978 (950hPa, severe typhoon). Data show that, although Judy did not reach super typhoon status in 1989, it exhibited strong explosive development during its rapid-intensification phase, and its peak intensity was highly competitive among storms with the same name in previous years.
