Typhoon Judy Route Analysis
Track and Turning Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Judy underwent a remarkably rapid intensification. It began as a tropical depression on August 16 with winds of 10m/s and a pressure of 1006hPa, then developed into a super typhoon in only about four days. Particularly from August 19 to 20, its pressure plunged from 945hPa to 920hPa while its maximum wind speed rose to a peak of 65m/s, demonstrating extreme explosive development. This peak phase was short-lived. After August 21, its intensity began fluctuating and declining, with pressure rising above 945hPa. After moving into higher-latitude waters, it continued to weaken due to falling sea-surface temperatures and increasing vertical wind shear, ultimately degenerating into a tropical depression.
Compared with storms of the same name in other years, Judy in 1979 was significantly stronger. Its minimum pressure of 908hPa was much lower than that of Judy in 1989 (945hPa), 1982 (956hPa), 1978 (950hPa), and 1986 (970hPa). Its maximum wind speed of 65m/s also far exceeded the peak intensity of other Judys, which were generally severe typhoons or typhoons. The data show that the 1979 Judy was the strongest and most explosive storm in the series, reflecting favorable environmental conditions for extreme typhoon development over the Northwest Pacific that year.

FAQ
Judy was the 1979 Typhoon.
The number 197910 for Typhoon Judy is the historical identifier retained by the CMA, meaning the tenth typhoon of 1979, while its international name was JUDY. The unified international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies, including the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities, used different numbers for the same typhoon, so these identifiers cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Judy's track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Judy?
Typhoon Judy peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 908 hPa.
Typhoon Judy Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Judy is not in our coastal Landfall.
