Typhoon Bill Route Analysis
Track characteristics and moving tracks
Typhoon Bill (198419) 的生命史始 at Northwest Pacific远洋海域, 整体路径呈现显著的“W进—N折—回旋消散”特征. formed初期 (11月8日至12日) , 系统位 at 153°E以E洋面, 主要受副热带高压S侧引导气流影响, 维持稳定的W toward Moving, 纬度基本保持在13°N至14.6°N之间. 11月13日至17日期间, 随着系统 toward W深入, 路径出现明显的N折Trend, 纬度从12.8°N迅速攀升至18.8°N, 经度则跨越至123°E附近, 显示其逐渐Go to 中纬度W风带影响范围或受高压脊形态变化驱动.
Notably, after reaching its northernmost point at 18.8°N, 123°E on November 17, the typhoon did not continue north toward landfall. Instead, it turned between November 18 and 19 and began moving southwest. This unusual U-shaped or looping track kept it over the sea for an extended period before it gradually weakened and dissipated over waters east of the Philippines. It made no landfall during its entire life cycle, with most of its activity confined to the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Bill’s intensity evolution went through three stages: rapid intensification, a peak phase, and gradual weakening. Beginning as a tropical depression on November 8 (10 m/s, 1004 hPa), the system rapidly organized while moving westward and developed into a severe typhoon in just five days. On November 14, its central pressure fell to 920 hPa and its wind speed reached 50 m/s. It then peaked on November 17 as a super typhoon, with a minimum pressure of 910 hPa and maximum winds of 60 m/s. The peak was short-lived, and its intensity began fluctuating and declining as the environmental field changed. After November 18, its pressure rose above 960 hPa and its wind speed dropped sharply, eventually ending its life on November 22 as a tropical depression.
Compared with storms of the same name in later years, BILL in 1984 was significantly more intense. The peak central pressure of BILL in 1981 (198115) was 958 hPa, while BILL in 1988 (198807) reached only 970 hPa and peaked at typhoon intensity. By contrast, BILL in 1984 reached super typhoon intensity, and its exceptionally low central pressure of 910 hPa reflected extremely strong core convection and efficient energy release. It was one of the most intense tropical cyclones in the northwest Pacific that year.
