Typhoon Vanessa Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
From October 26 to 27, the Typhoon reached its westernmost point between 131.8°E and 129.8°E, followed by a decisive turn in its track. After October 28, its movement gradually shifted from NW to due N, and then toward NE. From October 29 to 31, the system accelerated toward NE, with longitude moving eastward from 132.4°E to 162°E and latitude jumping sharply northward from 22.9°N to 40°N. Its rapid movement at high latitudes showed that it had broken away from the subtropical high and joined the westerly flow, eventually dissipating over the open ocean after becoming extratropical. It made no Landfall and mainly remained over open waters.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Vanessa underwent an extremely rapid intensification, becoming a typical remote-ocean Super Typhoon. Starting as a Tropical Depression on October 22 (10m/s, 1002hPa), it reached Typhoon strength (40m/s) in about 3 days by October 25. During the following 24h, its intensity surged explosively, reaching Super Typhoon strength by 02:00 on October 26 (60m/s, 900hPa). At 20:00 that day, it peaked, with the central pressure falling to 879hPa and maximum winds reaching 65m/s. After maintaining peak intensity for about 24h, the system began weakening as it moved northward, but remained at Super Typhoon or Severe Typhoon strength until October 29. After moving into higher latitudes, it was affected by cold sea waters and wind shear, rapidly weakening into a Severe Tropical Storm on October 31.
Compared with other storms of the same name, the Intensity of Vanessa in 1984 was overwhelmingly greater. The peak intensities of the same-named Typhoons in 1994, 1991, and 1988 were only Tropical Storm or Severe Tropical Storm, with minimum pressures around 990hPa, far higher than the 879hPa recorded by Vanessa in 1984. This shows that Vanessa in 1984 was the most energetic and tightly structured system among storms sharing the same name, and its rapid intensification over the open ocean was extremely rare among comparable historical cases.
