Typhoon Mary Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Mary’s intensity followed a typical pattern of intensification, peak intensity, and fluctuating weakening. It began as a tropical depression with winds of 15 m/s. Within just three days from December 23 to 25, its central pressure plummeted from 980 hPa to a minimum of 945 hPa, while maximum winds surged to 50 m/s, establishing it as a severe typhoon. However, the peak phase was brief. From December 26, its intensity declined rapidly as pressure rose above 970 hPa. Notably, during the latter stage of its lifetime on December 29–30, the system briefly showed signs of secondary intensification, with winds increasing to 30 m/s and pressure falling to 983 hPa. It failed to regain its earlier peak intensity and ultimately weakened into a tropical depression.
Compared with earlier typhoons of the same name, Mary’s peak intensity in 1977, at 945 hPa, lay between Mary in 1960 at 970 hPa and Mary in 1965 at 940 hPa, and was weaker than Mary in 1968 at 924 hPa and Mary in 1974 at 964 hPa. Although its minimum pressure was higher than the values recorded by Mary in 1974 and 1960, its extreme intensity was slightly below the super typhoon levels of Mary in 1968 and 1965, making it a moderately strong severe typhoon.

FAQ
Typhoon Mary is the 1977 Typhoon.
The number 197718 is the historical sequence number retained by the CMA for Typhoon Mary, the 18th typhoon of 1977. Its international name was MARY. Uniform international numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological agencies each assigned numbers that may differ and therefore cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Mary come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Mary?
Typhoon Mary peak intensity is Severe Typhoon, max wind 50m/s, minimum central pressure 945 hPa.
