Typhoon Ivy Trail Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
After turning, the typhoon’s movement speed increased markedly. From 150.5°E at 08:00 on October 24 to 159.4°E at 02:00 on October 27, near the end of its life, it traveled almost nine degrees of longitude eastward in roughly three days, while its latitude continued to rise northward to 32.6°N. Throughout its entire life cycle, the typhoon remained over the ocean with no recorded landfall and ultimately weakened and dissipated in the high-latitude seas.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Ivy’s intensity followed a complete formation–intensification–peak–weakening cycle. At the initial stage, central pressure stayed near 1004 hPa and wind speeds were low. From October 22, as the system became better organized, pressure dropped rapidly below 990 hPa and it strengthened into a tropical storm. October 24–25 was its main intensification period, with pressure plunging from 967 hPa to a minimum of 945 hPa and maximum wind increasing to 45 m/s, reaching severe typhoon strength. The peak stage was brief. After October 26, the system weakened under the influence of the high-latitude environment, with pressure rising to 970 hPa and wind speed falling to 35 m/s.
Compared with earlier typhoons of the same name, Ivy’s peak intensity in 1977 (945 hPa, 45 m/s) matched that of Ivy in 1974 (197411), with both reaching extreme intensity. Both were markedly stronger than Ivy in 1971 (978 hPa) and 1965 (990 hPa). This indicates that Ivy in 1977 and 1974 were exceptionally intense storms within the series. Although Ivy in 1977 did not make landfall and cause direct damage, its powerful oceanic development was notable and exemplified the rapid intensification typical of late-autumn typhoons in the Northwest Pacific.

FAQ
Typhoon Ivy is the 1977 Typhoon.
The number 197715 for Typhoon Ivy is the historical identifier used by the CMA, meaning the 15th typhoon of 1977, while its international name was IVY. The international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific was not introduced until 1981. Before then, agencies assigned their own numbers, so the numbers used by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities for the same typhoon could differ and are not directly comparable.
Where did the track data for Typhoon Ivy come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is Typhoon Ivy?
Typhoon Ivy peak intensity is Severe Typhoon, max wind 45m/s, minimum central pressure 945 hPa.
Is there a Typhoon IvyLandfall?
According to records, Typhoon Ivy is not in our coastal landfall.
