Typhoon Billie trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
7月17日后, 随着纬度突破27°N, 系统Go to 中纬度W风带, 移速加快并 toward NE direction深入, 最终 at 7月20日在42.7°N的高纬度海域减弱消散. 全生命周期内无Landfall记录, 主要活动区域集中在开阔洋面.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Billie’s intensity evolved through three phases: rapid intensification, a period of peak intensity, and gradual weakening. During the initial phase, central pressure declined slowly. After intensifying into a severe tropical storm on the evening of July 13, explosive intensification became especially notable: in about 36h, pressure plummeted from 988hPa to 920hPa, while maximum wind speed surged to 65m/s, reaching super typhoon intensity. Billie fluctuated near its peak intensity, first reaching 65m/s on the morning of July 15 before briefly weakening, then strengthening again to 65m/s on the evening of July 16 and reaching its minimum central pressure of 917hPa. This demonstrated the exceptional stability of its core structure. It subsequently weakened gradually under the influence of cold high-latitude waters and wind shear, eventually losing its tropical characteristics and becoming a temperate cyclone.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Billie in 1973 attained a relatively high intensity. Its minimum central pressure of 917hPa was lower than that of Billie in 1970 at 945hPa and Billie in 1967 at 979hPa. Although slightly higher than the 910hPa recorded by Billie in 1976, both storms qualified as highly destructive super typhoons. Compared with Billie in 1964, which reached only severe tropical storm intensity, the 1973 system underwent much more dramatic energy accumulation and release, reflecting the frequent occurrence of severe typhoons in this naming series.

FAQ
Typhoon Billie is the 1973 Typhoon.
Billie’s number 197303 is the historical identifier continued by the CMA, meaning No. 3 of 1973, while its international name was BILLIE. International numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies used separate numbering systems, so the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the USA, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon. These identifiers cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Billie come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Billie?
Typhoon Billie peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 917 hPa.
Typhoon Billie Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Billie is not in our coastal landfall.
