Typhoon Billie trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
The key turning point occurred around August 28. After crossing 27°N, the track curved markedly, shifting from northwestward to due north and then accelerating toward the northeast. Between 02:00 on August 28 and 20:00 on August 31, the typhoon’s center latitude rose rapidly from 27.4°N to 39.6°N, while its longitude fluctuated to around 126°E from 130.4°E. This reflected its rapid movement and turning under the influence of the mid- and high-latitude westerlies. It finally dissipated over the high-latitude waters near 43.2°N on September 1. It made no landfall and was a typical remote-ocean typhoon that turned toward the northeast.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the peak intensity of Typhoon Billie in 1970, with a central pressure of 945 hPa, was weaker than Billie in 1976 at 910 hPa and Billie in 1973 at 917 hPa. It was, however, significantly stronger than the systems of the same name in 1967 and 1964, which had central pressures of 979 hPa and 994 hPa, respectively. This shows that although the 1970 typhoon did not set the historical record for intensity, it remained one of the more intense storms in the Billie naming series. Its distinctive rapid intensification over remote waters and swift structural transformation are of considerable research value.

FAQ
Typhoon Billie was the 1970s Typhoon.
The identifier 197008 for Typhoon Billie is the historical number retained by the CMA, corresponding to the eighth typhoon of 1970. Its international name was BILLIE. Internationally unified numbering in the northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies used separate numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities could differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Billie come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Billie?
Typhoon Billie peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 55m/s, minimum central pressure 945 hPa.
Typhoon Billie Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Billie is not in our coastal landfall.
