Typhoon Olga Trail Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The key turning point in its track occurred from July 2 to 3. After reaching approximately 22.7°N, 124.8°E, its longitude stopped advancing westward. At 14:00 on July 3, it began turning eastward to 125.4°E, marking its completion of the northeastward transition. It then accelerated northeastward over the seas south of Japan before weakening and dissipating over the sea south of the Korean Peninsula on July 7. It made no landfall during its entire lifetime and remained at sea throughout.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Olga underwent three stages of intensity evolution: rapid intensification, a prolonged peak, and gradual weakening. It began as a tropical depression with winds steady at 10 m/s. Its main explosive intensification occurred from June 29 to July 1, with wind speed surging from 15 m/s to 70 m/s in under 48 hours and central pressure dropping to 904 hPa (note: the record shows 908 hPa at 08:00 on July 1, but the peak description confirms Super Typhoon intensity). From July 1 into the early hours of July 2, it maintained Super Typhoon intensity near 20°N before its intensity began fluctuating and declining due to its movement toward higher latitudes and possible vertical wind shear. After July 3, it turned northeast and weakened to typhoon strength and below before dissipating.
Compared with other storms of the same name, Olga in 1970 had exceptionally intense development. Its minimum central pressure of 904 hPa was far lower than in 1999 (970 hPa) and 1961 (980 hPa), and even lower than the 939 hPa recorded by the Super Typhoon Olga of 1972. This makes the 1970 storm the most intense and lowest-pressure typhoon recorded under the name Olga, demonstrating its tremendous release of energy.

FAQ
Olga was the 1970s Typhoon.
Olga's number 197002 is the historical identifier continued by the CMA, meaning the second typhoon of 1970. Its international name was OLGA. International numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China's meteorological authorities may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Olga's track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the most powerful typhoon Olga?
Typhoon Olga peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 70m/s, minimum central pressure 904 hPa.
Is the Typhoon Olga Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Olga is not in our coastal Landfall.
Where can I view typhoon Olga's live track map?
