Typhoon Lola Trail Characteristics
Track and Movement Characteristics
The key turning point occurred between October 17 and 18. When the center reached approximately 20.5°N, 136.2°, the typhoon attained its peak intensity. Its track then gradually shifted from northwestward to due north before accelerating toward the northeast. After October 20, the system entered the mid- and high-latitude westerlies and accelerated considerably, covering a greater span of longitude and latitude. On October 22, it weakened into a tropical depression at 45.8°N, 175.1°E, and its observations ended. Throughout its entire lifecycle, the typhoon made no landfall and remained over the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Lola’s intensity evolution featured a long buildup followed by a rapid intensification. From October 6 to 12, the system remained at tropical depression intensity, with pressure gradually falling to 1000hPa. Beginning on October 13, convection became increasingly organized and intensity rose rapidly, reaching super typhoon status from severe tropical storm strength in just 4 days. At 14:00 on October 17, Lola reached its peak intensity, with a minimum central pressure of 943hPa and maximum winds of 70m/s. Thereafter, it began to fluctuate and weaken under the influence of the high-latitude environment, with pressure rising to 952hPa and wind speed falling to 60m/s. After transitioning into an extratropical cyclone, its pressure increased further to above 990hPa, although the system retained its structural integrity for a relatively long time.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 1963 Lola reached a relatively high intensity. Its peak pressure of 943hPa was lower than that of the 1990 Lola at 995hPa, tropical storm intensity, and the 1978 Lola at 965hPa, typhoon intensity, but slightly higher than that of the 1979 Lola at 950hPa, severe typhoon intensity, and the 1986 Lola at 910hPa, super typhoon intensity. Notably, although the 1986 Lola had lower central pressure, the 1963 Lola maintained super typhoon intensity for longer. Its maximum winds of 70m/s also indicated an exceptionally powerful core wind structure, making it a notable remote-ocean severe typhoon case from the 1963 Pacific typhoon season.

FAQ
Typhoon Lola is the 1963 Typhoon.
196315 is the historical identifier used by the CMA for Typhoon Lola, meaning the 15th numbered typhoon of 1963, while its international name was LOLA. International cyclone numbering for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, individual agencies maintained separate numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities could differ for the same typhoon and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Lola come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the most powerful typhoon Lola?
Typhoon Lola peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 70m/s, minimum central pressure 943 hPa.
Typhoon Lola Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Lola is not in our coastal landfall.
