Characteristics of Typhoon Lingling
Track Characteristics and Moving Trends
Typhoon Lingling (202512) had a relatively short lifecycle, lasting about 3.5 days from formation to dissipation. Its track was generally characterized by a pronounced movement toward the NNE, with no recorded landfall. During the initial stage (11:00 on Aug. 18 to 05:00 on Aug. 19), the system was located over waters between 22.7° and 24.6°N and 126.4° and 127.3°E, moving relatively slowly, mainly toward the N and NE. After 11:00 on Aug. 19, its latitude rose rapidly to 26.7°N, its movement speed increased, and its track shifted to a more pronounced NE direction.
Notably, between 17:00 on August 19 and 23:00 on August 20, the system oscillated slightly in longitude between 127.0°E and 128.3°E, while its latitude steadily advanced from 27.8°N to 31.8°N, indicating a stable northward movement guided by the edge of the subtropical high or the westerly wind belt. Starting from the early morning of August 21, the track shifted further eastward, and the system finally weakened and dissipated near 31.7°N, 130.7°E at 20:00 on August 21. Throughout the process, the system remained over the ocean and did not directly impact land.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
In terms of intensity, Typhoon Lingling was generally weak, reaching only tropical storm strength at its peak. The system originated as a tropical depression with a central pressure of 1002 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 15 m/s. From August 19 to 20, affected by factors such as vertical wind shear and sea surface temperature, the intensity slightly decreased, with maximum winds dropping to 13 m/s and pressure rising to 1007 hPa. It was not until the late stage of its lifecycle (11:00 on August 21) that the system briefly intensified into a tropical storm, reaching its peak state with a minimum pressure of 1000 hPa and maximum winds of 18 m/s, before rapidly weakening and dissipating.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Typhoon Lingling (2025) was significantly weaker. Historically, Lingling (201913) and Lingling (200123) both developed into super typhoons, with minimum central pressures as low as 930 hPa and 927 hPa respectively, causing severe damage. Although Lingling (200719) was only a tropical storm, its minimum pressure reached 994 hPa, which was lower than that of the current system. Only Lingling (201401) had a similar intensity to the current one, both being tropical storms. However, the minimum pressure of Typhoon Lingling (2025) was 1000 hPa, slightly higher than the reference value of 1004 hPa for the 2014 system (note: the actual pressure in 2025 was slightly lower, but the magnitude was comparable). Overall, Typhoon Lingling (2025) was a weak tropical cyclone event.
