Characteristics of Typhoon Shanshan
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Shanshan (202410) began its lifecycle at 02:00 on August 22, 2024, initially near 16.9°N, 142.1°E. During its early formation, the system moved slowly toward the WNW. By 23:00 on August 23, its center had shifted west by only about 0.9° of longitude, while its latitude increased to 18.4°N. It then turned significantly toward the NW and accelerated under the guidance of the atmospheric circulation. From August 24 to August 27, its latitude rose rapidly from 21.6°N to 28.6°N, while its longitude moved substantially westward from 141.3°E to 130.3°E, indicating strong northwestward motion.
As it approached the waters off Kyushu, Japan, the track shifted again. After 17:00 on August 27, the typhoon’s center stabilized near 28.6°N and then turned nearly due north. It made landfall in Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan, at 07:00 on August 29. After landfall, the system continued toward the NNE over land and sea before weakening into a tropical depression at 20:00 on August 30, centered at 34.2°N, 133.4°E. Its overall track followed a typical parabolic pattern, moving west, turning northwest, and then heading north, spanning nearly 17° of latitude over a long distance.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
On August 28, 23:00 weakened into Severe Typhoon, by the eve of Landfall, August 29, 14:00 was reduced to Severe Tropical Storm, wind speed stepped down to 30m/s, and air pressure rose back to 980hPa, indicating that the Landfall process caused significant damage to its structure.
Compared with the historical typhoon, 2024 Shanshan's Intensity is significantly higher at recent similar systems. 2018 Shanshan peak is only Severe Typhoon (minimum atmospheric pressure 955hPa) , 2013 Shanshan is only reaching Tropical Storm level (minimum atmospheric pressure 1004hPa) . 2024 Shanshan with 935hPa extremely low atmospheric pressure and 52m/s extremely high wind speed, becomes the most recent intensity in the same name Typhoon, its peak intensity even exceeds the 2018 system's 20hPa atmospheric difference, reflecting the extreme characteristics of the typhoon system of the year.
