Typhoon Talim trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
Go to 8月29日后, 路径出现显著转折, Moving direction由正W转为WNW, 直指我国SEcoastal direction.
An analysis of its coordinates shows that the typhoon made most of its westward advance between 21°N and 24°N, rapidly crossing from 133°E to 121.4°E under strong steering flow. Although its center briefly approached waters off eastern Taiwan at 121.4°E, 23.83°N, it did not make landfall. Its track then continued northwest, passing through the northern Taiwan Strait or nearby waters before moving inland and weakening near the junction of western Jiangxi and southern Hubei at 114.1°E, 28.4°N. Its long track covered a vast area, and because it made no landfall, its near-shore wind effects were concentrated mainly at sea and along exposed coastal areas.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Talim underwent a complete cycle of formation, rapid intensification, peak-intensity maintenance, and rapid decay. The system reached its peak at 14:00 on August 30, with a minimum central pressure of 935 hPa and maximum winds of 55 m/s, making it a super typhoon. Notably, it remained at the extremely low pressure of 935 hPa for about 27 hours, from 14:00 on August 30 to 15:00 on August 31, indicating exceptional stability in its core structure. However, from 22:00 on August 31, its intensity declined rapidly as it approached land and the surrounding environment changed. Its pressure rose to 1002 hPa in less than two days, while its wind speed plunged from 52 m/s to 15 m/s.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Typhoon Talim in 2005 matched the peak intensity of the 18th typhoon of 2017 (both at 935 hPa and super typhoon strength), significantly stronger than the 4th typhoon of 2023 (960 hPa, typhoon) and the 5th typhoon of 2012 (985 hPa, severe tropical storm). This indicates that the 2005 and 2017 storms belong to the high-intensity tier of the Talim naming series and possess tremendous energy-release potential. Talim in 2005 also maintained its peak intensity longer and had a lower pressure near the coast, posing a more persistent and severe meteorological threat to waters along its path.
