Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Andy’s intensity evolved through a long period of gestation followed by explosive intensification. It remained a tropical depression for four days, from April 14 until the early hours of April 18, with its pressure dipping only slightly to 1000 hPa. After upgrading to a tropical storm on the evening of April 18, its intensity rose rapidly. Particularly between April 20 and 21, its central pressure plummeted from 980 hPa to 930 hPa within 36 hours, while its maximum wind speed surged from 30 m/s to 55 m/s, reaching super typhoon status. This rapid intensification was supported by excellent ocean thermal conditions. After its peak, the system weakened rapidly as it moved poleward and encountered cooler sea temperatures. From April 22 onward, its wind speed decreased by about 5–10 m/s every 12 hours before it dissipated into a tropical depression on April 25.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, the 1989 Andy was significantly stronger than the 1985 Andy, which reached typhoon status with a central pressure of 975 hPa, but slightly weaker than the 1982 Andy, which reached super typhoon status with a central pressure of 915 hPa. Although all three attained typhoon status or above, the 1989 Andy remained at low latitudes for longer and experienced a relatively linear decline after its peak, without a secondary period of intensification. Its track pattern and intensity changes were typical of an oceanic typhoon in late spring or early summer.
