Typhoon Peggy Trail Characteristics
Track and Movement Characteristics
Typhoon Peggy (198607) began over the open waters of the Northwest Pacific and followed a generally steady west-northwest track, with no notable turns or reversals. From its formation near 13°N, 162°E to dissipation near 23°N, 104°E, the system continued moving westward. Between June 30 and July 5, its latitude changed little, ranging from 13°N to 15°N, while it moved rapidly westward at an average of about 4–5 degrees of longitude per day. After July 6, as it approached the Philippines over the eastern waters, its track began a slight northward shift, with latitude rising from 15.8°N to 23°N by July 14. Despite this northward component, it never made a typical recurving turn and instead continued toward the Asian mainland. The typhoon made no landfall and eventually weakened and dissipated near the coast of Vietnam. Its track was long, straight, and entirely over the sea.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Go to 7月10日后, 减弱速度加快, 由Typhoon 级迅速降格为Severe Tropical Storm及Tropical Depression.
Compared with other storms of the same name, Peggy’s intensity in 1986 was notably greater. The 1994 typhoon reached only typhoon status, with a central pressure of 965 hPa, while the 1989 typhoon peaked at tropical storm strength with a central pressure of 995 hPa. Although the 1990 typhoon also reached super typhoon status with a minimum central pressure of 910 hPa, Peggy in 1986 had a lower central pressure of 900 hPa and stronger maximum wind speeds of 65 m/s, demonstrating more extreme intensity. It remains a notable severe typhoon in the historical series of storms named Peggy.
