Typhoon Marge Route Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The life cycle of Typhoon Marge (198317) began at 08:00 on October 30, 1983, over low-latitude waters in the northwest Pacific at 6°N, 149°E, initially as a tropical depression. Shortly after forming, the system maintained a stable northwestward movement trend. From October 30 to November 2, its center moved continuously westward from 149°E to near 140°E, while its latitude increased from 6°N to 16.1°N. Its track was relatively straight during this period, with no significant fluctuations.
A major turning point occurred after November 4. When the typhoon center reached near 18.8°N, 134°E while maintaining super typhoon intensity, its direction of movement began to change significantly. From 08:00 on November 5, the longitude gradually moved back east from 133.3°E to 133.8°E, before accelerating toward the northeast from November 6 to 7. By 20:00 on November 7, just before dissipating, the center had reached 38°N, 154°E. The overall track followed a typical parabolic pattern, moving northwestward, turning near the sea, and then moving northeastward. The turning point occurred over waters between latitudes 19°N and 21°N, with no landfall recorded throughout its passage.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Marge underwent rapid intensification to its peak intensity, maintained it briefly, and then weakened gradually. On November 1, the system intensified into a tropical storm and rapidly upgraded within 48 hours. In the 24 hours from 08:00 on November 3 to 08:00 on November 4, the central pressure plummeted from 962 hPa to 896 hPa, while the maximum wind speed surged from 40 m/s to 70 m/s, reaching super typhoon status. At peak intensity, its minimum central pressure was 892 hPa, with maximum winds remaining at 70 m/s for about three days, from November 4 to 6. After November 6, the system gradually weakened as it moved northward, eventually becoming a severe tropical storm.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Marge in 1983 had exceptionally intense characteristics. Its peak central pressure of 892 hPa was far lower than that of Marge in 1986, at 947 hPa; Marge in 1976, at 975 hPa; and Marge in 1970, at 987 hPa. Even compared with the 1973 super typhoon Marge, which had a minimum central pressure of 925 hPa, Marge in 1983 had a central pressure 33 hPa lower. This indicates stronger central convection and a lower central pressure, making it the strongest of the listed historical typhoons sharing the same name.
