Characteristics of Typhoon Ellen
Path and Moving Characteristics
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Ellen’s intensity followed a complete formation, intensification, peak, and weakening cycle. After becoming a tropical storm on September 2, it entered a period of rapid intensification. During the 48 hours from September 5 to 6, its central pressure plunged from 968 hPa to 935 hPa and its maximum sustained wind speed surged from 40 m/s to 55 m/s. At 20:00 UTC on September 6, it reached super typhoon status, with a minimum central pressure of 928 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 60 m/s, marking the peak of its lifetime. This peak phase was brief, however, and intensity began fluctuating downward from September 7 as pressure rose above 963 hPa. Until shortly before dissipation, it retained at least severe typhoon or tropical depression intensity, indicating some resilience in its core structure.
Compared with previous storms of the same name, Typhoon Ellen in 1983 was exceptionally intense. Its minimum central pressure of 928 hPa was lower than those of Ellen in 1980 (933 hPa), 1973 (943 hPa), and 1986 (960 hPa), and markedly lower than Ellen in 1976 (985 hPa). Its maximum sustained wind speed of 60 m/s also exceeded that of every other storm named Ellen, establishing it as the strongest in the series. Although Ellen in 1973 and 1980 also reached super typhoon or severe typhoon status, the 1983 storm set the highest records among contemporaneous storms of the same name in both minimum central pressure and peak wind speed.
