Analysis of Typhoon Vera
Path and Moving Characteristics
Typhoon Vera (197920) formed at Northwest Pacific低纬度海域, 初始Position位 at 5.3°N, 148.8°E.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Vera’s intensity followed a typical rapid intensification, peak maintenance, and rapid weakening cycle. At formation, it was a tropical depression with a central pressure of 1004 hPa. While moving westward, it encountered highly favorable environmental conditions and intensified rapidly, with its central pressure dropping by 84 hPa to below 920 hPa in just three days. At 02:00 on November 5, Vera reached its peak intensity, with a minimum central pressure of 915 hPa and maximum winds of 60 m/s, making it a super typhoon. However, it maintained this peak intensity for only a short time before unfavorable conditions caused its intensity to decline sharply. From 02:00 on November 5 to 14:00 on November 7, its central pressure rose by 89 hPa to 1004 hPa and its wind speed fell from 60 m/s to 15 m/s, returning it to tropical depression status. It remained a weak depression over the following days until the end of its life.
Among typhoons sharing the same name, Vera in 1979 was exceptionally intense. Its peak central pressure of 915 hPa was lower than that of Vera in 1986 (923 hPa) and Vera in 1977 (925 hPa), and it was markedly stronger than Vera in 1983 (967 hPa) and Vera in 1989 (980 hPa). The data show that the 1979 Vera was the strongest of the listed storms bearing this name, demonstrating tremendous explosive intensification and destructive potential, even though it did not make a direct landfall.

FAQ
Typhoon Vera is the 1979 Typhoon.
Vera’s designation 197920 is the historical number used by the CMA, meaning the 20th typhoon of 1979, while its international name was VERA. The internationally uniform numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, different agencies used their own numbering systems, so the JMA, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon, and these cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Vera come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Vera?
Typhoon Vera peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 60m/s, minimum central pressure 915 hPa.
Is the Typhoon VeraLandfall?
According to records, the Typhoon Vera is not in our coastal landfall.
