Typhoon Ida trajectory analysis
Track and Turning Characteristics
A key turning point occurred on September 23–24. As the system moved north to near 25.7°N, its direction shifted from northwest to due north and then quickly turned toward the northeast. In just 18 hours from 02:00 to 20:00 UTC on September 24, its latitude rose sharply from 30.3°N to 36.4°N, while its longitude advanced from 141.9°E to 146°E. This pattern indicated accelerated northeastward movement under the influence of southwesterly flow ahead of a westerly-wind-zone trough. The system then continued toward the northeast into the mid- to high-latitude seas, ultimately weakening and dissipating near 177°E on September 27. During its entire life cycle, the typhoon made no landfall and remained over the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Ida's intensity evolved through three phases: rapid intensification, a prolonged peak, and gradual weakening. Initially, the system strengthened rapidly from a tropical depression and reached typhoon intensity in about 36 hours. From the evening of September 21 to the afternoon of September 22, it underwent explosive intensification, with central pressure plunging from 970 hPa to 932 hPa and maximum wind speed rising to 60 m/s, reaching super typhoon intensity. The peak phase lasted about 48 hours, from September 22 to the early hours of September 24. Minimum central pressure remained between 932 and 935 hPa, and maximum wind speed stayed at 55–60 m/s, indicating a highly stable structure.
After moving into higher latitudes, the system weakened significantly from the afternoon of September 24 due to cold sea surface temperatures and vertical wind shear. Its wind speed fell from 40 m/s to 25 m/s within 36 hours, and it degenerated into a tropical depression on September 27.
Compared with other storms named Ida, the 1972 typhoon had a notably greater intensity. Its peak minimum central pressure of 932 hPa was far lower than that of Ida in 1975 (950 hPa), 1983 (973 hPa), and 1980 and 1986 (979 hPa and 986 hPa, respectively). In terms of maximum wind speed, the 1972 Ida reached the super typhoon threshold of 60 m/s, while the peak intensities of the other storms named Ida were only at the typhoon or severe tropical storm levels. The data show that the 1972 Ida was the strongest and most destructive member of the series.

FAQ
Typhoon Ida is the 1972 Typhoon.
The designation 197215 for Typhoon Ida is the historical number retained by the CMA, meaning the 15th tropical cyclone of 1972; its international name was IDA. Uniform international numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned to the same typhoon by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China's meteorological authorities may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does Typhoon Ida's track data come from?
Path. Data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speed refers to 2-min sustained wind speed. Track points at intermediate times are encrypted based on original operational positioning data, while wind speed and pressure are interpolated using best-track anchor points.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Ida?
Typhoon Ida peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 60m/s, minimum central pressure 932 hPa.
Is the Typhoon Ida Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Ida is not in our coastal landfall.
