Typhoon Lucy Route Analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
The most notable feature of Typhoon Lucy's track was its unusual loop after moving south. On July 20, the system weakened into a tropical depression near the southern Taiwan Strait but did not continue northward or make landfall. Instead, it turned sharply southward from July 21 to 22, with its center coordinates retreating from 24.9°N/120.5°E to 21.7°N/116°E, before intensifying again into a severe typhoon. This rare pattern of reintensification at a higher latitude and westward turn deep inland eventually led to the system dissipating near 104.8°E on July 24. It made no direct landfall throughout its lifetime but passed close to coastal areas.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Lucy in 1971 ranked among the most intense. Its minimum central pressure of 912 hPa was lower than that of Lucy in 1977 at 917 hPa, Lucy in 1968 at 941 hPa, and Lucy in 1965 at 944 hPa. Its maximum wind speed of 60 m/s was also exceptionally strong. By contrast, Lucy in 1974 reached only severe tropical storm status, with a central pressure of 990 hPa. Although the 1971 typhoon held a slight edge in peak intensity, the complexity of its track and repeated intensity fluctuations made it a distinctive case in the history of the name Lucy.

FAQ
Typhoon Lucy was the 1971 Typhoon.
The designation 197114 is the historical identifier used by the CMA for Typhoon Lucy, the 14th typhoon of 1971, whose international name was LUCY. The international numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies maintained separate numbering systems, so the numbers assigned by the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and Chinese meteorological authorities may not correspond directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Lucy come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Lucy?
Typhoon Lucy peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 60m/s, minimum central pressure 912 hPa.
Typhoon Lucy Landfall?
According to records, Typhoon Lucy is not in our coastal Landfall.
Where can I view typhoon Lucy's live track map?
