Typhoon Elsie Trail Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The key turning point occurred from September 26 to 27. When the center reached 23.4°N near 126°E, the typhoon began to slow and change direction. Its track then shifted clearly northward and, after September 28, turned fully toward the northeast, eventually moving deep into the high-latitude ocean. Throughout its lifetime, the system did not make landfall and remained over the open ocean until it dissipated on October 2 near the high-latitude region of 47.5°.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Elsie underwent an extremely rapid intensity explosion. From a tropical depression on September 18 (1001hPa) to its peak on September 23 took only about five days. Pressure dropped sharply by 113hPa to 888hPa, while maximum wind speed surged to 85m/s, establishing its status as a super typhoon. It maintained peak intensity for a relatively long period, remaining a super typhoon from September 22 to 26. Even near longitude 126° on September 26, it still maintained wind speeds of 55m/s and a pressure of 922hPa. Thereafter, affected by the high-latitude environment and possible vertical wind shear, it rapidly weakened, dropping to severe tropical storm intensity on September 27 and fluctuating downward during the following days.
Compared with other storms named Elsie, the 1969 Elsie had a highly representative intensity. Its minimum central pressure of 888hPa was lower than those of the same-named typhoons in 1992 (930hPa), 1989 (930hPa), and 1988 (992hPa), indicating stronger core convection. Notably, the same-named typhoon in 1981 reached a minimum pressure of 893hPa, very close to the 1969 Elsie; both were extremely severe typhoon cases rarely seen in the historical record. By contrast, the 1988 Elsie reached only severe tropical storm intensity, a significant difference. The data suggest that the name Elsie in certain years tends to produce tropical cyclone systems with exceptionally high intensity.

FAQ
Typhoon Elsie is the 1969 Typhoon.
The identifier 196911 is the historical numbering continued by the CMA for Typhoon Elsie, meaning the 11th typhoon of 1969. Its international name is ELSIE. International standardized numbering for Northwest Pacific typhoons did not begin until 1981; before then, different agencies used separate numbering systems. The identifiers assigned by JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and Chinese meteorological agencies for the same typhoon may differ and cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Elsie come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Elsie?
