Typhoon Cora trajectory analysis
Track and Movement Characteristics
The key turning point came between 5 and 6 September. After the center reached 24.4°N, 125.6°E and attained peak intensity, its movement gradually shifted to the north-northeast. After 7 September, the track clearly deflected toward the east, with longitude rebounding from 121.1°E to 127.5°E and latitude climbing north to 36.8°N. Throughout its entire life cycle, the typhoon made no landfall, remaining always at sea and finally weakening and dissipating over the eastern waters of Japan.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Cora's intensity evolution featured a violent burst of rapid intensification followed by quick decay. From a Tropical Depression on 31 August (1002 hPa) to a Severe Typhoon on 2 September (934 hPa), the central pressure plummeted 68 hPa in just two days while wind speed surged to 50 m/s. On 5 September, the system peaked near 24.4°N, with minimum pressure dropping to 918 hPa and max wind reaching 65 m/s, earning Super Typhoon status. However, the peak was brief: intensity declined rapidly from 6 September, pressure rebounded to 935 hPa, and wind speed was halved. After moving to higher latitudes, the system weakened into a Tropical Depression by 8 September.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Cora in 1966 was markedly more intense. Its minimum central pressure (918 hPa) was far lower than that of Cora in 1975 (944 hPa), 1969 (940 hPa) and 1972 (970 hPa). Even Cora in 1964, also rated a Super Typhoon, recorded a pressure of 970 hPa, indicating that the 1966 Cora was the strongest and lowest-pressure typhoon of the same name listed, displaying an extreme burst of energy.

FAQ
Typhoon Cora is the 1966 Typhoon.
The number 196615 for Typhoon Cora is the historical numbering still used by the CMA (the 15th typhoon of 1966); its international name is CORA. International uniform numbering in the Northwest Pacific only began in 1981, and before that each agency numbered storms on its own system, so the JMA (Japan), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (USA) and China's meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon, and these cannot be compared directly.
Where did the track data for Typhoon CORA come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Cora?
Typhoon Cora peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 65m/s, minimum central pressure 918 hPa.
The Typhoon CoraLandfall.
