Typhoon Opal Route Characteristics
Track and Movement Characteristics
The key turning point in the track occurred between December 15 and 16. At 08:00 on December 15, the typhoon was located at 15.2°N, 120.1°E, after which its movement slowed and turned. From 02:00 to 20:00 on December 16, its longitude increased slightly from 120.6°E to 121.3°E, marking a change in movement from northwest to north-northeast. The typhoon then accelerated toward the northeast, reaching 24°N, 127.2°E at 14:00 on December 17, before dissipating at 29.4°N, 143°E at 14:00 on December 18. There were no recorded landfalls during its entire lifetime, as it remained mainly over the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
The typhoon underwent extremely rapid intensification. Starting as a tropical depression at 08:00 on December 9 with winds of 15m/s and a central pressure of 1004hPa, it reached super typhoon status within about 52 hours, with winds of 65m/s and a central pressure of 942hPa by 14:00 on December 11. Its peak occurred at 08:00 on December 12, when the minimum central pressure fell to 904hPa and maximum winds reached 85m/s, maintaining super typhoon intensity. Intensity then gradually weakened, dropping to severe typhoon status at 14:00 on December 14 and weakening further into a severe tropical storm at 08:00 on December 15. While moving toward the northeast, the system continued to weaken due to environmental factors and eventually dissipated as a tropical depression.
Compared with previous typhoons bearing the same name, the 1964 Opal had overwhelming intensity. Its peak central pressure of 904hPa was far lower than those of Opal in 1997 at 960hPa, 1973 at 968hPa, 1970 at 991hPa, and 1976 at 996hPa. Opal in 1976 reached only tropical storm intensity, while the 1964 typhoon reached super typhoon status, with maximum winds of 85m/s demonstrating an exceptionally high energy level and making it the strongest of the same-named typhoons listed.

FAQ
Typhoon Opal is the 1964 Typhoon.
The number 196431 for Typhoon Opal is the historical identifier retained by the CMA, meaning the 31st typhoon of 1964. Its international name was OPAL. International typhoon numbering in the Northwest Pacific began only in 1981; before then, different agencies used their own numbering systems, so the JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and Chinese meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon. These identifiers cannot be compared directly.
Where did Typhoon Opal's track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the most powerful Typhoon Opal?
Typhoon Opal peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 85m/s, minimum central pressure 904 hPa.
