Typhoon Wilda Route Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
The key turning point occurred around September 24. At 14:00 on September 24, the typhoon was located at 30.8°N, 130.3°E, after which its track turned sharply to the right. By 08:00 on September 25, its center had moved to 36°N, 136.4°E, indicating that the system had completed its recurvature over the southern waters of Japan and had entered a rapid northeastward phase under the steering influence of the westerlies. It then crossed the Pacific toward the northeast at extremely high speed, moving from 36°N to 45°N in about 36 hours before weakening and dissipating near 51°N, 177.5°E on September 27. No landfall was recorded during its lifetime, and it remained mainly over the open ocean.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
The typhoon underwent explosive intensification. It strengthened from a tropical depression on September 19 (15 m/s, 1002 hPa) to a super typhoon at 20:00 on September 20 (65 m/s, 940 hPa) in just about 36 hours, with wind speed surging by 50 m/s and pressure plunging 42 hPa. It peaked at 14:00 on September 21, when the minimum central pressure fell to 906 hPa and the maximum wind speed reached 75 m/s, remaining a super typhoon for several days. Even while turning northward, it retained super typhoon intensity with winds of 55 m/s until 20:00 on September 23 at 27.5°N. As it moved to higher latitudes, cold sea waters and vertical wind shear caused its intensity to decline rapidly from September 24. It weakened to a severe tropical storm and ultimately became a low-pressure extratropical system.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, the 1964 Wilda had overwhelmingly greater intensity. Its peak pressure of 906 hPa was far lower than the 950 hPa recorded for Wilda in 1994, the 978 hPa recorded in 1973, and the weaker intensities recorded in 1976 and 1991. As Typhoon No. 19 of 1964, its extreme wind speed of 75 m/s and deep low-pressure structure made it one of the strongest tropical cyclones in the history of the name Wilda.

FAQ
Typhoon Wilda was the 1964 Typhoon.
The identifier 196419 is the historical number retained by the CMA for Typhoon Wilda, meaning the 19th typhoon of 1964. Its international name was WILDA. The internationally unified numbering system for the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981; before then, agencies maintained separate numbering systems. The Japan Meteorological Agency, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China’s meteorological authorities may have assigned different numbers to the same typhoon, so their identifiers cannot be compared directly.
Where does the track data for Typhoon Wilda come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the highest level of Typhoon Wilda?
Typhoon Wilda peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 75m/s, minimum central pressure 906 hPa.
Is the Typhoon Wilda Landfall?
