Typhoon Opal Route Characteristics
Track and Turning Characteristics
关键的转 toward 过程发生在8月5日之后. 随着纬度突破22°N并接近E亚大陆coastal , 受中高纬度W风带引导气流影响, 路径逐渐由NW转为N, 进而转 toward NE. 8月6日中心位 at 28.7°N, 118.9°E, 此后经度开始 toward E回流 (122.5°E -> 123°E -> 137°E) , 标志着完成转 toward . 最终, 系统穿越Japan以E海域, 深入N太平洋高纬度地区, at 8月14日 at 54.6°N, 174.8°附近消散. 全生命周期无Landfall记录, 主要活动 at 开阔洋面.
Intensity evolution and historical comparison
Typhoon Opal underwent extremely dramatic intensity changes and was a classic case of rapid intensification followed by rapid weakening. It began as a tropical depression, intensified into a severe tropical storm on August 1, and reached typhoon strength on August 3. The most remarkable phase was its explosive intensification from August 4 to August 5: within about 30 hours, the central pressure plummeted from 963 hPa to 900 hPa, while maximum winds surged from 50 m/s to 75 m/s, making it a super typhoon and marking the peak of its lifetime.
However, it maintained its peak intensity for only a very short time. On August 6, its intensity collapsed during the turn, with central pressure rising to 988 hPa and wind speed dropping to 9 m/s, reducing it to a tropical depression. Although it briefly reorganized as a tropical storm and then a severe tropical storm on August 8 and 9, it failed to regain deep convection and gradually filled in and dissipated over the cold, high-latitude sea.
Compared with previous typhoons of the same name, Opal in 1962 had overwhelmingly greater intensity. Its minimum central pressure of 900 hPa was far lower than those of Opal in 1997 (960 hPa), Opal in 1973 (968 hPa), and Opal in 1970 (991 hPa). Even Opal in 1976, which peaked only as a tropical storm with a central pressure of 996 hPa, was no match. The data show that Opal in 1962 was the strongest and most explosively intensifying typhoon in the Opal naming series.

FAQ
Typhoon Opal is the 1962 Typhoon.
The designation 196208 for Typhoon Opal is the historical identifier used by the CMA, corresponding to No. 8 of the 1962 typhoon season, while its international name was OPAL. International numbering in the Northwest Pacific did not begin until 1981. Before then, agencies used their own numbering systems, so the numbers assigned to the same typhoon by JMA in Japan, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the United States, and China's meteorological authorities could differ and should not be compared directly.
Where did Typhoon Opal's track data come from?
Track data sources: China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset (CMA-STI); wind speeds are 2-minute sustained wind speeds.
What is the most powerful Typhoon Opal?
Typhoon Opal peak intensity is Super Typhoon, max wind 75m/s, minimum central pressure 900 hPa.
The Typhoon Opal Landfall.
According to records, Typhoon Opal is not in our coastal landfall.
